Twenty seven students have been selected to study abroad on Villa scholarships next year. Villa Shipping and Trade Company had planned to fund only 25 students, according to Mohamed Hameed, Villa Director of Human Resources, but the number increased by two during the selection process. The names of the successful scholarship winners will announced later.

Villa received 235 applications and 70 candidates were short-listed for interviewing. 'We eventually interviewed 69 students; one wasn't available,' explained Hameed. 'and 27 were selected.' The scholarships are for undergraduate and post-graduate studies and a PhD student is also being financed, according to Hameed. The official handing over of the awards will take place soon.
Villa scholarships were introduced three years ago, and the number of awards has increased each year. In 1999 there were 20 scholarships, and 22 were granted last year.
